What should you know about EpCAM immunohistochemistry?

A pathologist applies an antibody-based stain to thin sections of tissue, usually taken from a biopsy or surgery. If EpCAM is present, the stain may produce colour in a particular distribution and intensity. The report can describe whether staining is absent, focal, or widespread, but that description is not interpreted in isolation. EpCAM expression can occur in several epithelial tumour settings, so the finding does not identify one cancer type on its own. The pathologist combines it with tissue architecture, other immunostains, and the clinical information.

Request the complete pathology report rather than relying on the EpCAM line alone. Ask which other markers were used and whether the panel supports the proposed tumour origin. If the tissue sample was small, ask whether there was enough material for additional testing. Your oncology team can explain how the result affects diagnosis, staging, treatment selection, or the need for another sample.

Seek urgent medical attention for heavy bleeding after a biopsy, increasing swelling, fever with worsening pain, fainting, or difficulty breathing. For a pathology result itself, arrange timely follow-up with the clinician who requested the test so that the complete report is interpreted in context.
