An ear, nose, and throat specialist may inspect the ear canal and eardrum before arranging hearing measurements. During audiometry, you usually wear headphones or ear inserts and respond when you hear tones. Speech testing may check how clearly you hear and repeat words at different loudness levels.

The pattern can help distinguish conductive hearing loss, involving sound transmission through the ear canal or middle ear, from sensorineural loss involving the inner ear or hearing nerve. Earwax buildup can block sound, while Meniere's disease can be associated with fluctuating hearing, tinnitus, pressure, and vertigo; a test supports assessment but does not alone confirm a diagnosis.

Bring details of when the change began, whether one or both ears are affected, tinnitus, dizziness, pain, discharge, noise exposure, and medicines. Tell the team if you have used hearing devices or had previous ear problems.

The test itself is generally straightforward and you control responses by pressing a button or raising a hand when a sound is heard. Avoid guessing patterns in the results. The clinician will explain whether you need ear treatment, repeat testing, hearing support, or further investigation.

Seek urgent medical assessment for sudden hearing loss, especially in one ear, or hearing change with severe dizziness, facial weakness, severe headache, or other neurological symptoms. Do not wait for a routine test in these situations.

Arrange an ENT review for steadily worsening hearing, one-sided tinnitus, recurrent ear discharge, persistent pain, or repeated balance attacks. New symptoms after a loud noise or head injury should also be reported promptly.
