What should you know about emission computed tomography?

Short answer

Emission computed tomography refers to CT imaging, which uses x-rays and computer processing to produce detailed cross-sectional pictures quickly.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Technology
Multiple x-ray images processed into cross-sectional slices
Possible contrast
A drink or injection may outline selected structures
Before scanning
Discuss pregnancy, kidney disease, and contrast reactions

What CT imaging shows

During a CT scan, you lie on a table that moves through a ring-shaped scanner. The equipment takes multiple x-ray images, and a computer combines them into slices that can be viewed from different angles. The scan may assess bleeding, a blockage, an injury, infection, or a mass. A contrast agent may be given by mouth or through a vein to outline organs and blood vessels more clearly.

The radiology team chooses the scan area and settings for the clinical question. A CT result is interpreted with your symptoms, examination, and other tests; an image alone does not confirm cancer. Your clinician may recommend another test, such as a biopsy, when tissue information is needed. Tell staff about pregnancy, kidney disease, allergies, and previous reactions to contrast before scanning.

How to prepare and recover

Follow instructions about fasting, drinking, and regular medicines. Remove metal objects from the area being scanned and wear the clothing requested. If contrast is used, you may notice warmth or a brief unusual taste. Report itching, rash, dizziness, or breathing difficulty immediately.

Most people can return to usual activities after a CT unless sedation or the illness itself limits them. Ask when the report will be available and whether you need a follow-up appointment. Drink according to the care team’s advice, particularly if contrast was used or you have a fluid restriction.

When to seek urgent help

Get emergency help for severe breathing difficulty, facial or throat swelling, fainting, sudden weakness, confusion, or chest pain after the scan. Seek urgent assessment for worsening severe pain, repeated vomiting, or a rapidly deteriorating condition that prompted the scan. Do not wait for the written report when symptoms are severe.

Questions to ask

What is the scan looking for, and will contrast be used? How should I prepare with my medicines or kidney condition? When will the images be reviewed? If the result is unclear, what is the next test?

Questions people ask

Does a CT scan confirm cancer?

No. It shows structures and changes that need clinical interpretation; tissue testing may be needed for a firm diagnosis.

Can I eat before CT imaging?

Sometimes, but instructions vary with the body area, contrast, and sedation. Follow the imaging service’s specific directions.
