What should you know about emergency colon resection?

A surgeon removes the affected bowel and examines the remaining ends. They may join the ends together, or create a stoma so stool leaves through an opening into a bag while the bowel heals. The choice depends on the cause, the bowel’s condition, infection, and your general health. Causes can include a severe blockage, a tear, loss of blood supply, or a growth that has narrowed the bowel. Tests and the operation may happen quickly, so the team will explain what is known and what remains uncertain.

Recovery can include intravenous fluids, pain relief, gradual return to food, and monitoring for bowel movement, infection, bleeding, and wound problems. If cancer is found or suspected, the removed tissue is examined and the result helps guide further care. Tell the emergency team about medicines, allergies, previous operations, blood-thinning treatment, diabetes, and the time you last ate or drank. If you can, bring your medication list and identify a family contact. Do not eat, drink, or take extra medicine unless the treating team permits it.

After surgery, follow wound and stoma instructions, walk as advised, and report worsening pain rather than waiting for a routine appointment. Ask when you may shower, drive, lift, work, and restart regular medicines. Keep follow-up visits because the team may need to review the tissue result and bowel function.

Seek emergency help for severe or increasing abdominal pain, a hard or swollen abdomen, repeated vomiting, fainting, confusion, heavy bleeding, difficulty breathing, or fever with marked weakness. After discharge, urgent assessment is also needed if the wound opens, becomes increasingly red or drains, the stoma changes colour, or there is no output with cramping and vomiting.
