What should you know about embryo transfer technology?

Short answer

Embryo transfer technology uses a fine catheter, often with ultrasound guidance, to place a selected embryo into the uterus during fertility treatment.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Main device
A soft catheter carries the embryo into the uterus.
Guidance
Ultrasound may help the clinician position the catheter.

How the technology works

The laboratory prepares the embryo while the clinical team prepares the uterus and confirms the transfer plan. During the procedure, a soft catheter passes through the cervix into the uterine cavity. Ultrasound can help the clinician view the uterus and guide placement. The embryo is released from the catheter, which is then removed. The equipment supports accurate placement, but it cannot guarantee implantation or pregnancy.

Preparing for the procedure

Follow the clinic’s instructions about medicines, bladder preparation, arrival time, and food or drink. Tell the team about allergies, bleeding, pain, or difficulty with previous cervical procedures. Afterward, take prescribed treatment on schedule and follow the activity advice given for your protocol. You may return home the same day, with arrangements for the pregnancy test. See [IVF](/treatments/fertility-and-assisted-reproduction/ivf/) for the wider treatment context and [Micronised Progesterone](/materials/micronised-progesterone/) for one type of hormonal support.

When to contact the clinic

Call the clinic about worsening pain, heavy bleeding, fever, unusual discharge, or feeling unwell after transfer. Urgent assessment is needed for severe pelvic pain, fainting, or breathing difficulty. Mild pressure or short-lived cramping may occur, but your own clinic can interpret symptoms alongside the procedure and your medical history.

Questions to take with you

Ask whether ultrasound guidance will be used, how the catheter route is chosen, what you should do if the bladder is uncomfortable, and when the pregnancy test is planned. Ask who to contact outside clinic hours.

Questions people ask

Is embryo transfer the same as egg collection?

No. Egg collection removes eggs from the ovaries; embryo transfer places an embryo into the uterus at a later treatment stage.

Can the catheter harm the embryo?

The transfer uses equipment designed for gentle handling, while the clinical team follows a planned procedure to release the embryo.
