What should you know about embryo hatching before transfer?

Short answer

Embryo hatching before transfer is a laboratory technique that thins or opens the embryo’s outer covering before it is placed in the uterus.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What assisted hatching involves

An embryo has a protective outer layer called the zona pellucida. In assisted hatching, an embryologist uses a laboratory method to make a small opening or thin part of this layer. The aim is to help the embryo emerge from its covering during the stage when implantation may occur. The technique does not place the embryo into the uterus and does not control whether implantation happens.

It may be considered in selected treatment situations, but the decision depends on embryo features, previous treatment history, laboratory practice, and the clinic’s assessment. It can be used as part of IVF, alongside the other steps that prepare and transfer an embryo.

What to do before and after transfer

Ask the embryology team which hatching method they use, why it is being considered for you, and whether the embryo will be assessed again before transfer. Confirm the timing of your lining medicines and continue them exactly as prescribed; progesterone support may be part of the plan.

After transfer, follow the clinic’s instructions for medicines, activity, and pregnancy testing. Hatching itself does not usually create a sensation you can use to tell whether implantation has occurred. Avoid changing treatment because of cramping, spotting, or the absence of symptoms without speaking with the clinic.

When to seek medical help

Call your fertility clinic for heavy bleeding, increasing pelvic pain, fever, faintness, or symptoms that concern you after the procedure. Get urgent medical help for severe pain, collapse, or breathing difficulty. These warning signs require assessment and cannot be interpreted as proof that hatching succeeded or failed.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether assisted hatching is appropriate for this embryo, what benefit the team expects, what risks or limitations they consider, and how the technique fits into your wider IVF plan.
