Alexandrite laser energy is absorbed more strongly by pigment in the hair shaft than by surrounding tissue. Heat travels toward the follicle and can reduce its ability to produce hair. The response is strongest when there is enough contrast between dark hair and the surrounding skin, although device settings and cooling affect safety and comfort.
