What should you know about elbow dislocation types?

A simple dislocation means the joint has moved out of place without a major fracture identified. A complex dislocation includes a fracture or another injury that can make the elbow less stable. Clinicians may also describe the direction in which the forearm has shifted relative to the upper arm. The label is confirmed through examination and imaging, not by appearance alone.

Keep the elbow still and supported after an injury, and never force it straight or attempt a reduction at home. The emergency team checks circulation and nerve function before and after realignment. A stable joint may be protected briefly before carefully guided motion, while a fracture or persistent instability may require specialist treatment. Physiotherapy is tailored to the joint’s stability and the healing structures.

Any suspected elbow dislocation needs urgent evaluation. Seek emergency help immediately if the hand is cold, pale, blue, numb, increasingly weak, or difficult to move, or if there is an open wound or major bleeding. Following reduction, return promptly for escalating pain, increasing tightness under a splint, new tingling, or loss of finger movement.
