What should you know about elastic stable intramedullary nailing?

The surgeon places curved, flexible nails through an entry point near the end of a bone. Their spring-like shape presses against the inner walls and helps resist bending and rotation. This method is used for selected fractures, often when a child or young person is still growing. The exact approach depends on the bone, fracture pattern, age, and soft-tissue condition.

Follow the prescribed limits on weight-bearing, splints, and sports. Keep the wound clean and attend imaging or follow-up visits so alignment and healing can be checked. Move the nearby joints as instructed, but do not force a painful range. Later, the nails may be removed if they cause irritation or once the bone has healed; timing is decided by the surgical team.

Contact the surgical team for fever, drainage, spreading redness, worsening pain, or a wound that opens. Urgent assessment is needed for new numbness, inability to move the hand or foot, severe swelling, or fingers or toes that become cold or discoloured after fixation.

Ask why this fixation suits the fracture, what movement and weight-bearing are allowed, how the entry sites should be cared for, which symptoms suggest a problem, and whether planned nail removal is expected.
