What should you know about EGFP flow cytometry?

EGFP is a fluorescent protein used as a marker in laboratory and research settings. When cells pass through a flow cytometer, lasers illuminate them and detectors record fluorescence alongside features such as cell size and internal complexity. The result helps separate labelled cells from unlabelled cells and can show how strongly the marker is present.

The method is a measurement technique, not a diagnosis by itself. Results depend on the sample, controls, instrument settings and the question being tested. A flow-cytometry report may describe the proportion of cells carrying the signal, signal intensity and whether several markers appear on the same cells.

Ask what sample is being tested, why EGFP was selected and which control samples were used. The laboratory may analyse blood, a cell culture or tissue prepared from a procedure such as a bone marrow biopsy. Keep the report with the relevant clinical or laboratory records. Interpretation should combine the EGFP signal with the other markers and the clinical question; a positive signal does not automatically mean cancer.

EGFP flow cytometry itself is a laboratory test, so urgent symptoms usually relate to the procedure that supplied the sample or to the underlying illness. Contact the clinical team for increasing bleeding, fever, severe pain, fainting or redness and discharge at a biopsy site. Seek emergency help for severe breathing difficulty, collapse or uncontrolled bleeding.
