Edinburgh Depression Scale antenatal: what to know

Short answer
The Edinburgh Depression Scale is a short antenatal questionnaire that helps a clinician explore mood and anxiety during pregnancy.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Used during
- Pregnancy and antenatal care
- Purpose
- Screening conversation about mood and anxiety
- Result
- Not a diagnosis on its own
What a result means
It asks about recent feelings such as sadness, worry, sleep, enjoyment, self-blame and thoughts of self-harm. The answers are a screening signal, not a diagnosis. Pregnancy can change sleep and energy, so a clinician considers your answers alongside your history, daily functioning and support at home. A higher concern score may lead to a fuller conversation about depression, anxiety or related symptoms; a lower score does not dismiss distress.
What to do after completing it
Answer as honestly as you can, based on the timeframe stated on the form, and tell the midwife, obstetrician or family doctor about anything that feels difficult to explain. You can discuss practical support, talking therapy and other treatment options suited to pregnancy. Keep a note of changes in sleep, appetite, concentration, energy and anxiety. When to seek care
Contact your maternity or primary-care team promptly if low mood, fear or loss of interest is affecting everyday activities, relationships, eating or sleep. Seek urgent help now if you are thinking about harming yourself, feel unable to stay safe, or are hearing or seeing things others do not. Do not wait for another questionnaire; tell someone nearby and use local emergency services.
Questions for your doctor
Ask: Which symptoms are most concerning in my answers? What support is available during pregnancy? When should we review my mood? Could another health problem or medicine be contributing to my fatigue or concentration changes?

Questions people ask
Can the scale diagnose antenatal depression?
No. It helps identify people who may need a fuller clinical assessment and support.
Should I complete it if I am mainly anxious?
Yes. Tell the clinician about anxiety as well as sadness, because both can need attention during pregnancy.
