Eczema Peeling: What to Know

Inflamed eczema can make the outer skin layer dry, flaky, and loose. Peeling may follow itch and scratching, a flare after exposure to a cleanser or product, or healing skin that is shedding surface scale. It can affect the hands, feet, face, or body and may occur with redness, burning, tightness, or small cracks.

Peeling alone does not identify the cause. Ring-shaped scale, a sharply bordered patch, or a rash that affects one side may suggest a fungal problem rather than eczema. Yellow crust, oozing, worsening tenderness, or warmth can indicate infection.

Do not pull off loose skin or scrub flakes. Use lukewarm water, a mild fragrance-free cleanser, and a thick moisturiser or ointment after washing. Keep nails short to reduce injury from scratching. Pause new cosmetics, fragranced products, and harsh exfoliants until the skin settles. A prescribed anti-inflammatory treatment may be needed for active eczema; use it as directed rather than applying it to an undiagnosed scaly rash.

Book an assessment if peeling is persistent, widespread, recurrent, or interfering with sleep or daily tasks. Seek prompt care if the skin becomes very painful, rapidly swollen, hot, or wet, or develops pus, yellow crust, blisters, or fever. A clinician can decide whether examination, a swab, or a scale test is appropriate.
