Eczema on One Hand: What to Know

The hands repeatedly encounter water, detergents, sweat, surfaces and materials, so one hand may receive more exposure than the other. Atopic dermatitis is a possible cause, but the same appearance can occur with irritant contact dermatitis, an allergy, psoriasis or a fungal infection. Look for a clear border, ring-like scaling, blisters, nail changes or symptoms on the feet, and share these details at an appointment. The appearance and history matter more than the side alone.

Clean the hand with lukewarm water and a mild, fragrance-free product. Pat it dry and apply a thick moisturiser immediately, then repeat whenever the skin feels tight. Use gloves for cleaning and food or chemical handling, keeping the inside dry and taking breaks from occlusion. Avoid scratching, fragranced creams, harsh scrubs and very hot water. If a product burns, wash it off and stop using it. A pharmacist can help select a suitable barrier moisturiser.

Book a review if the rash persists, recurs in the same pattern, affects work or sleep, or fails to improve with trigger avoidance and moisturising. Seek prompt attention for increasing warmth, swelling, pus, severe tenderness, red streaks or fever. A clinician may need to distinguish eczema from infection before recommending treatment, particularly when only one hand is involved or the rash is spreading.
