Eczema and dry knuckles: what to know

The skin over knuckles stretches with movement and is often exposed to washing, cold air, friction, and cleaning substances. During an eczema flare it may look red, scaly, thickened, or darker after inflammation settles. Splits over a joint can hurt whenever the finger bends. A similar pattern may result from contact dermatitis or another cause of hand irritation, so the timing of flares matters.

Apply a fragrance-free cream or ointment after washing and whenever the skin feels tight. Cover the hands in cold or windy conditions, and use protective gloves for wet or chemical work. Avoid picking scale or stretching a fresh crack. Keep showers and handwashing comfortably warm rather than hot. If inflammation remains active, a clinician can recommend a topical medicine and explain how to use it safely over joint skin.

Arrange a review if cracks repeatedly reopen, finger movement becomes painful, or the area does not improve with barrier care. Prompt assessment is needed for spreading redness, warmth, swelling, pus, or crusting, which can indicate infection in broken skin.
