Eczema and dry fingertips: what to know

Frequent handwashing, detergents, solvents, cold air, and repeated wet-to-dry cycles can strip protective oils from the fingertip skin. Eczema may then cause redness, scaling, tenderness, and small fissures around the pads or nail edges. Fingertip eczema can interfere with typing, cooking, washing, or gripping objects. It is a presentation of atopic dermatitis, although contact irritation or allergy can look similar.

Use lukewarm water and a fragrance-free cleanser, then pat dry rather than rubbing. Apply a thick, bland moisturiser immediately after washing and reapply whenever the skin feels tight. Wear protective gloves for wet work, with a comfortable cotton layer if sweating worsens irritation. Avoid picking loose skin and pause products that sting. A clinician can help choose an anti-inflammatory treatment when moisturising alone is not enough.

Arrange medical advice if cracks keep reopening, pain limits hand use, or symptoms do not settle with careful barrier protection. Seek prompt assessment for increasing warmth, swelling, pus, honey-coloured crusting, or spreading redness, because broken skin can become infected.
