What should you know about eczema blisters?

Tiny, deep-seated blisters are especially associated with hand and foot eczema, while irritated eczema elsewhere may look wet, shiny, or blistered. Scratching can break the surface and leave an open area. The underlying condition is often Atopic Dermatitis, which can also cause dry, itchy, thickened, or cracked skin. Blisters can resemble other rashes, so their location, appearance, and timing matter.

Do not deliberately pop the blisters. Wash gently with lukewarm water, pat dry, and apply the moisturiser recommended for your skin. Keep fingernails short and use a cool compress for itch. Avoid fragranced products, harsh cleansers, heat, and friction. If a blister opens, cover it with a clean, non-stick dressing and change it when damp or dirty. A clinician can match anti-inflammatory treatment to the body site and severity.

Arrange medical care if blisters are spreading, painful, repeatedly returning, or interfering with sleep or movement. Seek prompt assessment for increasing warmth, swelling, pus, honey-coloured crusting, fever, or rapidly worsening redness, because these changes can signal infection. Urgent care is appropriate for widespread blistering, severe pain, or involvement of the eyes, mouth, or genitals.
