What should you know about EBV-associated DLBCL?

Diffuse large B-cell lymphoma, or DLBCL, starts in B lymphocytes, immune cells found in lymph tissue and other parts of the body. EBV testing can identify viral material or proteins in the lymphoma cells. The result is one part of the diagnosis; the pathology team also examines the cell pattern and markers, while scans and blood tests help show where disease is present. EBV positivity does not by itself describe the whole outlook or select one treatment for every person.

The illness may cause a growing lump, fever, drenching night sweats, unexplained weight loss, tiredness, or symptoms related to the affected organ. These symptoms can have other causes. Your haematology team combines examination, biopsy findings, imaging, and your general health before recommending care.

Ask for a clear explanation of the pathology report, including what EBV test was used and whether additional markers are being checked. Treatment commonly involves systemic medicines, with chemotherapy often forming part of the plan. The schedule and combination depend on lymphoma features, stage, symptoms, and fitness for treatment. Keep a list of medicines and allergies, report infections promptly, and ask before receiving vaccines or supplements during treatment. If the lymphoma returns or does not respond as hoped, the team may discuss options such as CAR T-cell therapy or another approach.

Contact your team promptly for fever, chills, new shortness of breath, unusual bleeding, severe weakness, or inability to keep fluids down. Seek emergency help for confusion, a seizure, sudden weakness, severe breathing difficulty, or rapidly worsening swelling. Treatment can lower immune defences, so do not wait for a routine appointment when infection symptoms appear.
