Easy on PC spirometer: what to know

A spirometer records breathing volumes and flow during forceful breathing. The result can help assess airflow problems, follow a known lung condition, or see how breathing changes after an inhaled medicine. A single reading is not a diagnosis: effort, posture, instructions, recent illness and the device setting can all affect it. Results are compared with your history and expected values.

Use the device exactly as demonstrated. Sit or stand as instructed, seal your lips around the mouthpiece, breathe in fully, then blow out hard and keep going for as long as directed. Repeat when asked. Avoid eating a large meal, smoking or strenuous exertion shortly before testing if your clinician has given that advice. Ask whether to use or pause inhalers before the appointment; do not change them independently.

Do not rely on a home reading during severe breathlessness. Seek urgent help for trouble speaking because of breathing, blue or grey lips, fainting, severe chest pain or rapidly worsening symptoms. Contact your clinician when readings repeatedly differ from your personal plan or symptoms are increasing.

Ask which readings matter, how to record them, what your personal action thresholds are, and whether medicines should be taken before testing. Confirm how often the device needs cleaning and when its accuracy should be checked.
