What should you know about early-stage triple-negative breast cancer?

Triple-negative means testing did not find oestrogen receptors, progesterone receptors, or excess HER2 receptors on the cancer cells. Because hormone treatments and HER2-directed treatments do not target these features, the team considers other approaches. Early stage describes the extent found during examination and staging; it does not describe how a person feels.

Assessment may include breast imaging, a biopsy, examination of lymph nodes, and scans or tests chosen for the individual situation. The biopsy report helps confirm the cancer type and grade. Staging information then guides whether treatment starts before surgery, after surgery, or uses both.

A breast surgeon, medical oncologist, radiologist, pathologist and specialist nurses may discuss the case together. Treatment can involve surgery, chemotherapy, immunotherapy for selected situations, and radiotherapy when indicated. The sequence depends on tumour size, lymph-node findings, biopsy details, general health and personal preferences.

Ask how the diagnosis was confirmed, what the stage means in your case, and why a particular sequence is recommended. Bring a written medicine list and someone you trust if that helps you remember information. Contact the oncology team promptly for fever, chills, new breathlessness, chest pain, uncontrolled vomiting, severe diarrhoea, unusual bleeding, or a sudden change at the treatment site. During systemic treatment, ask in advance which symptoms need a same-day call because infection and treatment reactions can become serious quickly.

Seek emergency help for severe difficulty breathing, fainting, confusion, signs of a severe allergic reaction, or chest pain that does not settle. If distress, sleep problems or low mood are making daily life difficult, tell the team; supportive care can be added alongside cancer treatment.
