What should you know about early stage cat skin ringworm?

A cat may develop a small area of hair loss, broken hairs, scaling, redness, crusting, or a circular-looking patch. Some cats have little irritation, while others scratch or groom the area. The appearance can resemble allergies, mites, bacterial infection, or injury, so a skin examination and tests may be needed. Ringworm spreads through infected hairs and contaminated bedding, brushes, furniture, and surfaces. People and other pets can be affected.

Contact a veterinarian for confirmation and a treatment plan. Until then, wash hands after handling the cat, avoid sharing brushes, and keep bedding and resting areas clean according to veterinary guidance. Limit close contact with vulnerable household members and other animals if advised. Treatment may involve topical antifungal treatment, oral antifungal treatment, or both, depending on the cat and the extent of infection. Never use human creams or essential oils without veterinary direction.

Arrange veterinary review for any unexplained bald or scaly patch, especially if it enlarges or new areas appear. Seek prompt help when the cat seems unwell, stops eating, has widespread lesions, or a person in the home develops a new ring-shaped rash.
