Early growth scan

During the scan, a sonographer places gel on the abdomen and moves an ultrasound probe across the skin. Measurements commonly include the baby’s head, abdomen and thigh bone. The examination may also review position, heartbeat, amniotic fluid and the placenta. Doppler assessment can examine blood flow when the maternity team needs more information.

A scan gives an estimate rather than a direct weighing. Results are interpreted with the pregnancy dates, earlier scans, family pattern and maternal health. One measurement may lead to a repeat scan so the team can assess the growth trend.

Ask the clinic whether you need a particular bladder preparation; instructions vary with the stage and type of scan. Wear comfortable clothing and bring previous reports if requested. Tell the sonographer about pain, bleeding or reduced fetal movement before the examination. Ask when results will be reviewed and whether another growth scan or fetal heart monitoring is planned.

Contact maternity care urgently if fetal movement is reduced, you have vaginal bleeding, leaking fluid, painful regular contractions, severe abdominal pain, severe headache or visual changes. A scheduled scan is not a substitute for assessment of a new pregnancy warning sign. The maternity team can tell you where to attend based on your symptoms and gestational stage.

Ask what prompted the scan, which measurements will be compared, whether blood flow and fluid look reassuring, and when the report will be available. You may also ask whether a 3D/4D ultrasound adds useful medical information; it is different from the measurements used to monitor growth.
