Earache and sore throat on one side

The ear and throat share nerve pathways, so inflammation in the throat can be perceived as ear pain even when the ear looks normal. Tonsillitis, Strep Throat, and a Common Cold may cause throat pain with fever, swollen glands, congestion, or painful swallowing. Allergic Rhinitis and Acid Reflux can irritate the throat without the same infection pattern.

COVID-19, Influenza, and Glandular Fever can also cause sore throat with broader symptoms. One-sided pain does not identify a single diagnosis; an examination is useful when symptoms are marked, persistent, or changing.

Drink fluids, choose soft foods if swallowing hurts, rest your voice, and avoid smoke or other irritants. A warm drink or salt-water gargle may soothe the throat. If suitable for you, take an over-the-counter pain reliever according to its label. Do not share antibiotics or use leftover medication.

Check your temperature and note whether the pain, swelling, voice, or swallowing ability is changing. A clinician may examine the throat, tonsils, neck, and ears and decide whether testing or targeted treatment is needed.

Seek urgent help if you cannot swallow saliva, have trouble breathing, develop a muffled voice, cannot open your mouth normally, or notice rapidly increasing one-sided swelling. Arrange prompt medical advice for high fever, dehydration, a rash, severe ear pain, ear discharge, or symptoms that are not improving.

Ask whether the ear pain is referred from the throat, whether the tonsil or neck needs examination, and whether a throat swab or other test is appropriate. Mention exposure to illness, reflux symptoms, allergies, and any difficulty swallowing.
