Earache after blowing your nose

The Eustachian tube connects the middle ear with the back of the nose and helps balance pressure. A cold, sinusitis, or swollen nasal lining can narrow it. Blowing hard against a blocked nose may briefly push pressure toward the ear, causing pain, popping, fullness, or muffled hearing. An ear infection or wax blockage can coexist, so the trigger does not prove the cause.

Note whether symptoms began during a cold, affect one or both ears, and whether swallowing changes the pressure. Hearing loss, fever, or discharge gives a clinician useful additional clues.

Blow one nostril at a time with the other open, using gentle pressure. Sip fluids and swallow or yawn to encourage natural pressure equalisation; stop if this increases pain. Saline nasal rinsing may ease congestion when done with safe, clean water and appropriate technique. Keep objects and unapproved drops out of the ear. Consider suitable label-directed pain relief if you can take it safely.

Arrange a review if pain or blocked hearing persists, repeatedly returns, or follows a forceful pressure event. Seek urgent care for sudden marked hearing loss, severe dizziness, facial weakness, blood or pus from the ear, swelling behind it, or a severe headache with confusion or neck stiffness.
