Ear tear repair: what to know

An ear tear can involve the lobe or another part of the outer ear, and its treatment depends on depth, location, bleeding, and tissue damage. The clinician looks for foreign material, crushed skin, infection, and reduced blood flow. Some fresh injuries need cleaning and observation before closure, while a healed split may be repaired as a scheduled procedure.

Use clean gauze and gentle pressure for bleeding, and avoid twisting, pulling, or applying unprescribed creams. Keep the wound protected while arranging assessment. Following repair, clean it only as instructed, take prescribed medicines as directed, and avoid activities that catch the ear. Attend follow-up so the clinician can check the closure and healing.

Seek urgent help for bleeding that continues despite pressure, a large or contaminated wound, severe swelling, colour change, or an injury caused by a bite. Prompt review is needed for spreading redness, heat, pus, fever, increasing pain, or a wound that separates.

Ask whether the tear needs immediate closure, what type of anaesthetic will be used, and how the repair may affect the ear’s appearance. Discuss dressing changes, stitch care, activity limits, scar management, and the signs that should bring you back sooner.
