Ear Pain With Laryngitis: What to Know

Laryngitis inflames the voice box and commonly occurs alongside an upper-respiratory illness. Shared nerves in the throat and ear can make pain seem to travel toward the ear, even when the ear itself is healthy. A common cold may add nasal blockage and pressure, while acid reflux can irritate the throat and voice box.

Ear discharge, significant hearing loss, severe ear tenderness, or a high temperature is less typical of simple referred pain and may suggest an additional ear or throat problem.

Rest your voice, speak softly rather than whispering, drink fluids, and avoid smoke and other irritants. Do not force your voice while it is hoarse. Warm drinks may soothe the throat, but avoid anything that worsens reflux for you.

A GP consultation can help distinguish referred pain from an ear infection, wax, or another cause. Antibiotics are not routinely useful for laryngitis unless a clinician identifies a bacterial infection that needs them.

Arrange medical advice if hoarseness persists, ear pain worsens, swallowing becomes difficult, or symptoms keep returning. Seek urgent help for trouble breathing, inability to swallow fluids, drooling, rapidly increasing neck swelling, severe dizziness, or facial weakness.
