Ear pain when lying on your side

Pain that appears when the ear touches a pillow can come from irritation of the outer ear canal or its surrounding skin. Pain deeper inside may reflect pressure behind the eardrum, often after a cold or with Sinusitis. Earwax buildup can create fullness and make pressure feel more uncomfortable. Jaw-joint strain or nighttime clenching can also send pain toward the ear. A Middle Ear Infection may cause ongoing pain, fever, hearing change, or fluid, rather than pain only from contact.

Sleep on the opposite side or use a pillow that leaves the sore ear without direct pressure. Keep the ear dry and avoid scratching, earbuds, and cotton buds. A warm compress outside the ear may help. Consider suitable over-the-counter pain relief only after checking the label and your own medical conditions. Do not place oils or drops in the canal unless a clinician or pharmacist recommends them.

Book an examination if the pain continues after removing pressure, repeatedly disrupts sleep, or is linked with hearing loss, fever, discharge, or jaw locking. Seek urgent help for severe pain, sudden hearing loss, significant dizziness, or swelling behind the ear.
