Ear pain with a feeling of water inside

A wet or blocked sensation does not always mean liquid is behind the eardrum. Water can remain in the ear canal after bathing, and swollen canal skin can create fullness and tenderness. Earwax buildup may trap moisture and muffle sound. Congestion from a common cold or sinusitis can stop the middle ear from equalising pressure, producing popping, pressure or a fluid-like feeling. Middle-ear infection may add deep aching, fever or hearing change. The sensation needs context and, sometimes, direct examination.

Keep the ear dry and let it drain naturally after washing. Rest with the head slightly raised if congestion is present, and avoid forceful nose blowing. Never use cotton buds, keys or other objects to reach inside. Avoid ear drops or flushing when there is discharge, a possible eardrum problem, ear tubes or prior surgery unless a professional recommends them. Use labelled pain relief only if it is safe for you. Persistent symptoms deserve an ear check rather than repeated home cleaning.

Seek medical advice for pain that continues, new hearing loss, discharge, fever or repeated blockage. Obtain urgent help for severe dizziness, facial weakness, swelling around the ear, severe worsening pain, or symptoms after a head injury. Prompt examination can distinguish trapped canal moisture from wax, pressure problems and infection.
