Ear pain on the left side

A Middle Ear Infection, irritated ear canal, or Earwax Buildup can affect one ear. Congestion from a Common Cold or Sinusitis may create pressure on one side. Tonsillitis, dental irritation, or jaw clenching can also be felt near the ear. The location is useful information, but examination is needed to distinguish these causes.

Keep the left ear dry and avoid probing it. Use a warm outer compress if comfortable, and ask a pharmacist about age- and health-appropriate pain relief. Note whether chewing, swallowing, lying down, or touching the ear changes the pain. Do not use leftover Antibiotic Treatment or ear drops unless a clinician advises them.

Arrange prompt care for worsening one-sided pain, fever, discharge, new hearing loss, swelling behind the ear, or dizziness. Seek urgent help for facial weakness, severe illness, or difficulty breathing or swallowing. Persistent pain without obvious ear findings also deserves review because nearby structures can refer pain.

Ask whether the ear canal and eardrum are clear, whether wax or infection is present, and whether the jaw, teeth, throat, or sinuses could be contributing. Ask how long to monitor symptoms and which changes require reassessment.
