Ear pain during a flight: what to know

Short answer
Ear pain during a flight commonly happens when pressure cannot equalise through the Eustachian tube, especially during descent.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

- Pressure, popping, fullness or muffled hearing

- Swallowing, yawning and chewing
What the pressure means
The middle ear is an air-filled space behind the eardrum. During changes in cabin pressure, air needs to move between the middle ear and the back of the nose. If that passage is narrowed, you may feel fullness, popping, muffled hearing or aching. Earwax buildup can also muffle hearing, while an infection can cause pain that continues after landing.
What you can do
During take-off and landing, stay awake if possible, sip water, swallow often, yawn or chew gum. You can try a gentle pressure-equalising manoeuvre by pinching your nose, closing your mouth and blowing very lightly; stop if it hurts. Do not insert objects into the ear. If you have congestion, ask a pharmacist whether a suitable nasal treatment is appropriate for you, particularly if you have other medical conditions.
When to seek care
Arrange medical assessment if severe pain, marked hearing loss, dizziness, fluid or blood from the ear, or fever occurs. Seek prompt care when pain remains strong after the flight or worsens rather than settling. A clinician can examine the eardrum and distinguish pressure injury from conditions such as Middle Ear Infection or Sinusitis.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether congestion, earwax or an infection is affecting pressure equalisation, and whether flying again soon needs any precautions. Discuss safe options for pain relief and whether your symptoms warrant Ear Wax Removal or Antibiotic Treatment.

Questions people ask
Why is ear pain often worse during landing?
Descent can create a pressure difference that the middle ear must equalise through the Eustachian tube.
Can a cold make flight-related ear pain worse?
Yes. Nasal swelling may narrow the Eustachian tube and make pressure changes harder to manage.
