Ear Pain After Pool

Pool water, chlorine, and repeated wetting can irritate the canal. Water left in the ear can soften the canal skin and make irritation more likely. Pain that increases when the outer ear is touched or moved can point toward the ear canal. Pressure, muffled hearing, discharge, or worsening tenderness can also occur with inflammation. A pool setting does not by itself identify the cause.

Earwax can hold water against the canal and contribute to blockage or discomfort. Congestion from a cold or sinus problem may create pressure deeper behind the eardrum, which is different from soreness at the ear opening.

Keep the ear dry while it settles. Tilt your head to each side and gently dry the outside with a towel; do not push cotton buds, fingers, or other objects into the canal. Avoid pouring oil, alcohol, vinegar, or household mixtures into the ear, especially if you have a perforated eardrum, ear tubes, discharge, or previous ear surgery.

A pharmacist or clinician can advise whether a suitable pain reliever is safe for you. Do not use leftover antibiotic drops or tablets without an examination. If blockage is the main problem, ask about safe assessment rather than trying to dig out wax.

Arrange a medical review if pain is getting worse, does not begin improving, or comes with discharge, reduced hearing, fever, marked swelling, or repeated episodes. Seek urgent care for severe pain, swelling spreading around the ear, dizziness, facial weakness, or feeling very unwell. Children, people with diabetes, and anyone with reduced immunity should seek advice promptly because ear infections may need earlier treatment.
