Ear ache with strep throat: what to know

Strep throat is a bacterial throat infection that commonly presents with a painful throat and may also include fever, swollen glands, red or enlarged tonsils, and pain when swallowing. Shared nerve pathways can make throat inflammation feel like ear ache, even when the ear itself looks normal. Tonsillitis can create a similar pattern. Cough and runny nose may point towards a viral illness instead, but symptoms alone cannot reliably identify the germ. A clinician may examine your throat and decide whether a test is needed.

Arrange a GP consultation if strep throat is suspected, especially when swallowing is difficult or symptoms are pronounced. Drink fluids, rest, and choose soft foods. A pharmacist can advise about suitable pain relief. Antibiotic treatment is used only when a clinician considers it appropriate; do not share antibiotics or use leftover medicine. If prescribed, take it exactly as directed and seek advice about unexpected reactions.

Seek urgent care for difficulty breathing, inability to swallow saliva, drooling, a muffled voice, severe one-sided throat swelling, neck swelling, dehydration, or rapidly worsening pain. Prompt review is also needed for ear discharge, sudden hearing loss, severe dizziness, or marked weakness. Children who are not drinking or are unusually drowsy need timely assessment.
