What should you know about dutch measles?

The name Dutch measles can be confusing because it refers to measles, or rubeola, rather than a separate illness. Infection can cause fever, cough, runny nose, sore or red eyes, and a rash that often begins on the face before spreading. Swollen glands may occur. Measles can pass between people through the air, so someone may spread it before the rash is obvious.

If measles is possible, phone a GP practice before attending so staff can reduce contact with other patients. Rest, drink fluids, and use symptom relief only as advised for your age and health. Avoid school, work, and close contact while infectious according to clinical advice. Check your vaccination history; MMR vaccination helps prevent measles and can be discussed with a clinician.

Arrange prompt medical advice for a suspected measles rash, especially after contact with a case or travel. Seek urgent help for breathing difficulty, severe drowsiness, confusion, dehydration, a seizure, or a rapidly worsening condition.
