During pregnancy itching breasts: what should you know?

Breast growth can stretch the skin and make it feel tight or itchy, including around the nipples and areolae. Sweat, friction from a bra, scented laundry products, or a new body product may cause irritation. Redness, scaling, cracking, moist skin beneath the breast, or a defined rash can occur with Contact Dermatitis, Atopic Dermatitis, or a skin yeast infection. One-sided warmth, increasing tenderness, discharge, or feeling unwell needs clinical review rather than home treatment alone.

Wear a clean, well-fitting, breathable bra and change out of damp clothing. Wash gently with lukewarm water, pat dry carefully beneath the breast, and apply a fragrance-free moisturiser to dry intact skin. Avoid scratching, fragranced products, and unprescribed steroid or antifungal creams. If the nipple is cracked or sore, mention it to your maternity clinician, particularly if you are breastfeeding or planning to breastfeed.

Arrange prompt assessment for a spreading rash, marked redness or warmth, pain, pus, fever, a new lump, bloody or unusual nipple discharge, or skin that becomes ulcerated or blistered. Seek urgent help for breathing difficulty or swelling of the face, lips, or tongue. Persistent itch that disrupts sleep, affects both breasts without a rash, or fails to improve with simple care also warrants discussion with your maternity team.

Ask whether the skin needs examination for dermatitis, yeast, or another cause; which moisturiser or medicine is pregnancy-safe; and whether nipple changes require a breast assessment. Describe timing, side affected, rash appearance, discharge, and recent product or bra changes.
