What should you know about dull patchy skin?

Patches can be lighter, darker, redder, or rougher than nearby skin. Flat brown areas may follow acne, eczema, a scratch, or hair removal; sun exposure can make uneven colour stand out. Fine scale or itch suggests surface irritation or inflammation, while a sharply bordered patch may need a closer examination. Dullness itself is a visual description, not a diagnosis.

Take note of the location, onset, texture, and any products applied there. A photograph in consistent lighting can help you describe change at an appointment, but it cannot replace an examination.

Keep cleansing gentle, moisturise areas that feel dry, and protect exposed skin with broad-spectrum sunscreen. Avoid picking, bleaching mixtures, rough exfoliation, and repeated rubbing. If a new product preceded the change, pause it and simplify your routine until the skin settles.

A dermatologist can assess whether a prescription treatment or a professionally selected chemical peel is appropriate. Peels are not interchangeable: strength, ingredients, preparation, and aftercare should be matched to the cause and your skin tone.

Arrange care when a patch expands quickly, becomes painful, bleeds, crusts, changes in shape or colour, or remains scaly despite gentle care. Seek prompt help for blistering, marked swelling, or a widespread reaction after a product. New or changing solitary lesions deserve direct assessment rather than cosmetic treatment.

Ask what the patch pattern suggests, whether you should stop any product, which ingredients can be introduced safely, and what changes would mean the treatment needs review.
