What should you know about a dull ache in the lower right back?

Pain that changes with bending, lifting, sitting, or walking can arise from back muscles, small spinal joints, or discs. Nerve irritation may add tingling, numbness, or pain travelling into the buttock or leg. A condition such as lumbar spondylosis can present with low-back aching and stiffness, particularly after periods of inactivity; the symptom alone does not establish that diagnosis.

Right-sided pain can also overlap with urinary or abdominal problems. Burning urination, blood in urine, fever, nausea, or marked abdominal pain needs medical assessment rather than treatment as a simple back strain.

Keep gently active within your limits instead of staying in bed for long periods. Short walks, changing position regularly, and avoiding heavy lifting may reduce aggravation. A wrapped warm or cool pack can be tried for a short period, with a cloth barrier protecting the skin. Note what triggers the ache, whether it travels, and any urinary or bowel changes.

A clinician or physiotherapist can check movement, strength, sensation, and the hip area to choose exercises or other treatment safely. Do not force stretches that increase leg pain, numbness, or weakness.

Get urgent care for new bladder or bowel control problems, numbness around the groin, progressive leg weakness, severe pain after a significant injury, fever with severe back pain, or unexplained weight loss with persistent symptoms. Arrange a review if the ache is worsening, recurring, or interfering with normal activities.

Ask whether your examination suggests a muscle, joint, disc, nerve, urinary, or abdominal source, which activities to modify, and which warning signs should prompt urgent review.
