What should you know about dry skin makeup?

Dry skin has a less even surface, so foundation may catch on flakes, settle into fine lines or make tightness more noticeable. Fragrance, alcohol-rich products, long-wear pigments and repeated rubbing may sting or worsen irritation in some people. Asteatotic eczema, atopic dermatitis and psoriasis can all cause scaling or inflammation; makeup may camouflage these changes without treating their cause.

Check whether the problem is limited to makeup days or continues without cosmetics. Itch, redness, cracking, burning or recurrent scale deserves attention as a skin symptom rather than being covered repeatedly.

Cleanse gently, pat dry and apply a plain moisturiser. Give it time to settle before makeup, then use a thin layer of hydrating primer or flexible base if comfortable. Press product on with clean fingers or a soft damp sponge instead of buffing over flakes. Avoid sharing cosmetics, replace products that smell different or cause stinging, and remove makeup gently at the end of the day. Emollient therapy can support the barrier, but keep ointments away from the eyes unless advised.

Stop a product and seek medical advice if you develop swelling, marked burning, blisters, weeping or eye symptoms after applying makeup. Arrange a dermatology review for dryness that persists, cracks, bleeds, becomes painful or repeatedly flares despite a simple routine. Bring the products or ingredient lists to the appointment; this can help identify an irritant or allergic pattern.
