Short answer

Dry skin between the toes can follow friction or a damaged skin barrier, but peeling, itch, odour, soreness, or spreading redness may need assessment for infection or eczema.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What may be happening

Tight footwear, rubbing, sweat, and leaving the toe webs damp can irritate the skin. Atopic Dermatitis or Asteatotic Eczema can cause dryness and fissures, while Psoriasis may affect the feet as well as other sites. Peeling or macerated skin between toes can also have an infectious cause, particularly when itch, odour, or a spreading edge is present. The symptom alone cannot identify which condition is responsible.

Look for cracks, white soggy skin, blisters, scale on the soles, nail changes, or involvement of the other foot. These observations help a clinician decide whether moisture control alone is enough.

Care for the toe webs

Wash gently, rinse away cleanser, and dry carefully between every toe. Choose breathable footwear, rotate shoes, and change damp socks. Use a plain moisturiser on dry surrounding skin, but avoid filling a moist or weeping toe web with heavy ointment unless advised. Emollient Therapy can help dry, intact skin elsewhere on the foot. Do not share towels or footwear while an infection is possible.

When medical advice matters

Arrange a review if the skin is peeling, itchy, cracked, or recurrent, or if careful drying does not improve it. Seek prompt help for spreading redness, warmth, swelling, pus, fever, or difficulty walking. People with diabetes, reduced sensation, or poor circulation should seek advice early for cracks or sores on the feet.

Questions for an appointment

Ask whether the appearance fits eczema, irritation, or infection; whether footwear or sweating is contributing; and which product can be used safely without trapping moisture between the toes.

Questions people ask

Should I moisturise between my toes?

If the skin is dry and intact, a small amount may help, but heavy products can trap moisture. Ask a clinician if the web is soggy, cracked, or weeping.

Can footwear cause dryness between toes?

Yes. Friction, heat, and dampness from tight or poorly ventilated footwear can irritate the toe webs and weaken their barrier.
