Dry skin between fingers: what to check and how to care for it

Frequent handwashing, sanitiser, detergents, cleaning work, and prolonged glove use can strip the skin barrier. Atopic Dermatitis may cause itch, redness, and fissures in the hands. Asteatotic Eczema can add marked dryness and cracking. Psoriasis may cause thicker scale or cracks elsewhere on the hands. Moist, itchy, peeling skin between fingers can also have causes that require an examination, so avoid assuming it is only dryness.

Record what your hands contact, whether both hands are affected, and whether the problem follows a particular glove, soap, or task. Pain, swelling, blisters, or discharge are useful details to report.

Rinse with lukewarm water, use a gentle fragrance-free cleanser, and dry carefully between the fingers. Apply a thick, plain moisturiser after washing and at bedtime; Emollient Therapy may be appropriate for recurring dryness. Use protective gloves for wet work, with a breathable layer underneath when practical, and change damp gloves. Do not seal a weeping or infected-looking area under occlusive products without medical advice.

Arrange a review when cracks are painful, the rash keeps returning, itching is intense, or self-care does not help. Seek prompt care for rapidly spreading redness, warmth, pus, fever, or swelling that limits finger movement. A clinician can assess for eczema, contact dermatitis, or infection and select targeted treatment.
