What should you know about dry runny nose?

Dry air, air conditioning, smoke and fragrance can make the nasal lining sting while irritation triggers extra fluid. Allergic Rhinitis, House Dust Mite Allergy and Pet Allergy may cause clear discharge, sneezing or itching after exposure. A Common Cold, Influenza or COVID-19 can add congestion, sore throat, tiredness or fever. Sinusitis may cause pressure and thicker mucus. These patterns can overlap, and the symptom does not by itself confirm a condition.

Use a saline spray or rinse, drink regularly and blow your nose gently. For nasal rinsing, use sterile or boiled and cooled water as directed. Avoid smoke, dust and heavily scented products, and protect the skin around the nostrils with a suitable bland product intended for that area. A pharmacist can advise about allergy treatment or decongestants; some nasal sprays can worsen congestion or irritation when used incorrectly.

Seek urgent help for trouble breathing, facial or throat swelling, confusion, or a severe headache with neck stiffness. Arrange a review for persistent fever, marked facial pain, repeated bleeding, foul-smelling one-sided discharge, or symptoms that keep worsening. Get advice if dryness is linked to a prescribed nasal medicine or does not improve after irritants are removed.
