Short answer

A dry rolling-seal spirometer measures the volume and flow of air you breathe out during a supervised lung test.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What the device does

The device uses a sealed chamber with a rolling mechanism that moves as you breathe through a mouthpiece. Sensors or the instrument's scale translate that movement into measurements of airflow and lung volume. During Spirometry, a technician explains each manoeuvre, checks the mouth seal and may ask for a strong, fast breath followed by continued exhalation. Results are interpreted with your symptoms, examination and personal factors; a number on its own does not identify a disease.

How to prepare

Wear comfortable clothing and follow the testing centre's instructions about meals, smoking and medicines. Tell the technician if you have recently had chest pain, surgery, an infection, dizziness or difficulty following breathing instructions. Sit upright, use the nose clip if provided and seal your lips around the mouthpiece. Give your best effort without forcing yourself past pain or severe breathlessness, and report light-headedness promptly. Several attempts may be needed so the readings can be compared.

When to pause or seek help

Tell the technician immediately if you develop chest pain, faintness, severe breathlessness, wheezing or unusual distress during testing. Seek urgent care for severe breathing difficulty, blue lips, confusion or chest pain that does not settle. Contact the clinician who ordered the test if you remain unwell afterwards or if your symptoms are worsening.

Questions for your doctor

Why has spirometry been recommended for me? Should I change any inhalers before the appointment? Which result or symptom will determine the next step?
