Dry ringworm: symptoms, care, and when to get help

This infection is caused by fungi rather than a worm. It can spread through direct skin contact or shared towels, clothing, sports equipment, and other personal items. Scratching may move the infection to nearby skin. The location matters: scalp, nails, face, and extensive areas may need a different plan from a small patch on the body.

Keep the area clean and dry, wash hands after touching it, and avoid sharing towels, clothing, or razors. Wear breathable clothing and wash items that contact the rash. A pharmacist or clinician can advise whether topical antifungal treatment fits the site. Do not use a steroid cream alone on a suspected fungal rash, as it can mask changes and allow it to spread.

Arrange medical advice if the rash involves the scalp, nails, face, a child, or a person with reduced immunity; if it is spreading; or if it does not improve with appropriate treatment. Seek prompt help for pus, severe pain, fever, or rapidly increasing redness.
