Dry ring on the skin: possible causes and next steps

Asteatotic eczema can produce dry, cracked, patterned patches, often when the skin barrier is depleted. Atopic dermatitis may cause itchy, dry areas with recurring flares. Psoriasis can form sharply defined scaly plaques. A ring can also be an early clue to a different rash, so appearance alone should not be used to label it.

Wash with a gentle cleanser, keep showers comfortably warm rather than hot, and apply a thick fragrance-free emollient soon after bathing. Avoid scratching, fragranced products, and friction over the patch. Photographing the area occasionally can help show whether its border or size is changing. Do not share towels if the diagnosis is uncertain.

Arrange a review if the ring enlarges, returns, cracks, bleeds, affects the scalp or nails, or fails to settle with moisturising. Seek prompt care for severe pain, pus, fever, or rapidly spreading redness.
