What should you know about dry hyperpigmented skin?

Short answer
Dry hyperpigmented skin is darker, rough or flaky skin that can follow irritation or inflammation, so treatment should address the barrier problem and its underlying cause.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Why dryness and darker colour can appear together
Dry Skin can develop cracks, scaling, itch, and a rough texture. When skin becomes inflamed or repeatedly rubbed, pigment-producing cells may leave the area darker after the irritation settles. The colour may be brown, grey, or deeper than the surrounding skin, depending on your natural skin tone. Asteatotic Eczema and Atopic Dermatitis can cause dryness and inflammation; Psoriasis may create well-defined scaly plaques. Appearance alone cannot identify the cause.
Gentle barrier care
Use a mild, fragrance-free cleanser and lukewarm water, then pat dry. Apply an emollient while the skin is slightly damp and repeat when it feels tight; Emollient Therapy can be tailored to the body area. Avoid picking, abrasive scrubs, and unprescribed lightening or steroid products, which may irritate skin or alter its appearance. Reduce friction and protect exposed areas from sunlight, because light can deepen post-inflammatory colour.
When an examination is useful
Book a dermatology assessment if the patch is new and rapidly changing, persistently itchy, painful, bleeding, crusted, or spreading. Seek earlier review when dryness is severe, cracks keep reopening, or several body areas are involved. A clinician can inspect the scale and distribution, ask about exposures and medicines, and decide whether testing or prescription treatment is needed.
Questions for your doctor
Is this post-inflammatory pigmentation, eczema, psoriasis, or another condition? Which moisturiser texture suits this area? Should I stop any current product? How can I prevent friction and protect the patch while the skin heals?

Questions people ask
Does darker dry skin always mean eczema?
No. Eczema is one possibility, but irritation, psoriasis, contact reactions, and other causes can produce similar dryness and colour change.
Can moisturiser remove the darker colour?
Moisturiser helps repair dryness and reduce irritation, but the pigment may need time to fade and may require diagnosis-specific care.
