Dry, Cracked, Swollen Lips: What to Know

Wind, sun, dry air, repeated licking, fragranced lip products and contact with irritating foods can damage the lip barrier. Cracks then allow moisture to escape and may make swelling more noticeable. Eczema or another inflammatory skin problem can also affect the lips. Sudden swelling, especially after a food, medicine or sting, can be angioedema; this can occur with or without hives. The pattern, speed of onset and other symptoms matter more than the word dry alone.

Stop newly introduced lip products and avoid licking, picking or peeling loose skin. Apply a plain, fragrance-free ointment frequently, including after eating and before sleep. Protect the lips from wind and sun, drink normally, and avoid foods that sting open cracks. Do not apply a steroid, antibiotic or antifungal product to the lips unless a clinician has recommended it, because the wrong product can worsen irritation or hide infection.

Get emergency help for swelling of the tongue or throat, trouble breathing, wheezing, faintness, or difficulty swallowing. Arrange prompt medical assessment when swelling develops quickly, follows a new exposure, keeps returning, or is accompanied by widespread hives. Seek a routine review if cracks bleed repeatedly, become increasingly painful, ooze, or do not settle after avoiding irritants and using gentle protection.
