Dry cough and laryngitis: what should you know?

Laryngitis affects the vocal cords, so the voice may sound rough, weak or disappear. A common cold can inflame nearby tissues and provoke a dry cough; acid reflux can do this by irritating the throat and voice box. Sore throat, throat clearing and discomfort when speaking may accompany the problem. The pattern, duration and any fever or breathing symptoms help a clinician decide whether another cause needs checking.

Give your voice regular quiet periods, drink fluids and avoid shouting, singing, smoke and vaping. Do not whisper for long periods because it can also load the voice. Moist air may feel soothing, and simple throat measures may help. If reflux is suspected, keep meals moderate, avoid lying down soon after eating and identify personal triggers. Antibiotics are not routinely useful for every episode, so seek advice before using leftover medicine.

Get urgent help if breathing becomes difficult, swallowing is unsafe, saliva cannot be swallowed, or the throat suddenly swells. Book a GP consultation when symptoms are not improving, keep returning, or interfere with work or eating. Seek earlier review for coughing blood, severe pain, dehydration, persistent fever or a voice change that remains after the acute illness.

Ask how long voice rest should continue, whether reflux treatment is appropriate, and whether an examination is needed before returning to heavy voice use.
