Dry combination skin

Short answer

Dry combination skin means some areas feel tight or flaky while others produce more oil, so care should support dry zones without blocking pores.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Typical pattern
Dryer cheeks with oilier central facial areas
Best approach
Use lighter care broadly and richer care only where needed
Avoid
Harsh cleansing and scrubbing flaky skin

How the pattern happens

Oil production is not identical across the face. The cheeks or skin around the eyes may feel dry while the forehead, nose, or chin looks shiny. Over-cleansing, strong exfoliants, weather, and irritating products can make the contrast more noticeable. Atopic Dermatitis, Asteatotic Eczema, or Psoriasis may cause dry patches, but combination texture by itself does not establish any of these conditions.

A balanced routine

Cleanse gently once or twice daily with lukewarm water, then apply a light fragrance-free moisturiser across the face. Add a richer cream or Emollient Therapy to flaky zones rather than coating every area heavily. Avoid scrubbing dry patches and do not use harsh products to chase shine. Choose non-comedogenic products when breakouts are also a concern, and change one product at a time.

When to seek care

Arrange a dermatology review if scaling is persistent, intensely itchy, painful, sharply outlined, or spreading, or if new products repeatedly cause burning and redness. Seek prompt care for facial swelling, extensive blistering, or signs of infection such as increasing warmth and drainage. Assessment can separate ordinary variation from dermatitis or another treatable problem.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether your dry zones suggest dermatitis, which moisturiser is suitable for oily areas, and whether exfoliating ingredients should be paused while the barrier recovers.

Questions people ask

Can skin be dry and oily at the same time?

Yes. Different facial areas can produce different amounts of oil, while cleansing or irritation can make other zones feel dry.

Should I moisturise an oily area?

Usually yes, with a light non-comedogenic product selected for that area.
