Saliva left around the mouth, chin, neck, or skin folds can soften and irritate the outer skin barrier. Redness, dryness, soreness, small cracks, or a slightly shiny rash may follow. Sudocrem is a thick barrier product that can help shield irritated skin from further moisture and friction; it does not identify or treat every cause of a rash.

If the rash spreads beyond saliva-exposed areas, forms a ring, develops blisters or pus, or keeps returning despite sensible care, another condition may be involved. Possibilities include contact dermatitis, heat rash, or intertrigo. A rash can also be part of atopic dermatitis, psoriasis, ringworm, scabies, or a drug rash, each of which needs a different approach.

Rinse or wipe the area with lukewarm water, then pat rather than rub. Allow the skin to dry before applying a small amount of Sudocrem or another suitable barrier. Reapply after washing and whenever saliva has soaked the skin. Keep bibs, towels, and clothing dry, and change damp fabric promptly.

Arrange a clinical assessment if the rash is painful, rapidly worsening, warm, swollen, crusted, weeping, or associated with fever. Seek prompt help for swelling of the lips or face, breathing difficulty, or a widespread rash after a new product or medicine.
