What should you know about draining a Bartholin cyst?

Bartholin glands sit near the vaginal opening. If a duct becomes blocked, fluid can form a cyst; if germs enter, it can become an abscess with increasing pain, swelling, warmth, or difficulty sitting and walking. A lump is not automatically an abscess, so examination helps distinguish a simple cyst from infection or another vulval problem.

Drainage may release trapped fluid and relieve pressure. A clinician may use a small catheter or create a lasting opening through marsupialisation, depending on the cyst, symptoms, previous episodes, and examination findings.

Arrange a medical appointment if the lump is painful, growing, recurring, or interfering with daily activities. Keep the area clean and wear loose underwear. Warm water soaks may provide temporary comfort if they are safe for you, but do not insert objects, pierce the lump, or try to force drainage. If it opens by itself, keep the area clean, use a pad if needed, and arrange advice because the cavity can remain infected or close again.

Seek same-day care for severe or rapidly worsening vulval pain, spreading redness, pus, feverishness, or difficulty walking or urinating. Get urgent help if you feel faint, confused, or severely unwell. A new Bartholin-area lump after menopause also deserves prompt clinical assessment, even if it is not very painful.
