Doxylamine for nausea: safety and use

Doxylamine is an antihistamine that can reduce nausea in selected circumstances. It does not treat every cause of feeling sick, such as food poisoning, gastroenteritis, gastritis, acid reflux, gallstones, heat exhaustion, hepatitis A, or low blood sugar. Identifying the cause matters because vomiting can lead to dehydration and some illnesses need specific treatment.

Doxylamine commonly makes people sleepy, slows alertness, and may cause a dry mouth or blurred vision. Alcohol, sedatives, and other medicines that cause sleepiness can intensify these effects.

Check the label and follow the dose given by a pharmacist or clinician. Do not drive, cycle, use machinery, or make safety-critical decisions until you know how it affects you. Sip fluids regularly, choose small bland meals when tolerated, and keep a record of vomiting, urine output, pain, and fever.

Before taking doxylamine, discuss pregnancy or breastfeeding, glaucoma, difficulty passing urine, breathing problems, liver disease, and all medicines or supplements. Do not combine products that contain the same antihistamine.

Seek urgent help for severe or persistent abdominal pain, blood or coffee-ground vomit, green vomit, fainting, confusion, severe headache with a stiff neck, or signs of serious dehydration such as very little urine. Get prompt advice if vomiting continues, you cannot keep fluids down, or nausea follows a head injury. Seek immediate help for swelling of the lips or face, wheezing, or trouble breathing after a dose.
