What should you know about doula for VBAC?

A doula may help you prepare a birth preferences document, practise comfort measures, understand common labour terminology, and involve your chosen support person. During labour, support can include position changes, breathing prompts, massage, reassurance, hydration reminders, and help communicating questions. A doula does not diagnose problems, perform clinical checks, interpret monitoring, prescribe medicines, or decide whether labour should continue.

VBAC planning is individual. Your previous Caesarean details, current pregnancy, hospital resources, and personal preferences all matter. A repeat Caesarean may remain part of the agreed plan if circumstances change.

Ask prospective doulas about their VBAC experience, availability around your due period, backup arrangements, fees, communication style, and boundaries with clinical advice. Share your previous birth experience and ask how they would support you if induction, pain relief, assisted birth, or Caesarean became recommended. Confirm that the doula understands your hospital’s visitor and support-person policies. Meet the clinical team separately to discuss labour monitoring and emergency planning.

Call your maternity unit for contractions, vaginal bleeding, leaking fluid, reduced fetal movement, severe abdominal pain, or concerns about labour. Do not wait for a doula to assess these symptoms. In labour, tell the clinical team promptly about new pain, dizziness, breathlessness, heavy bleeding, or feeling suddenly unwell; the doula can support communication while clinicians assess you.

Ask whether VBAC is suitable for you, what monitoring is recommended, how quickly a Caesarean could be arranged if needed, which support people are allowed, and how your doula can work alongside the hospital team.
